I'm back!

Hi Everyone - thanks for being so co-operative when I was gone.  I hear that you were great.

For the next couple of weeks we will be reading short stories (period 2) and reading our novel, Shattered.  Here are a couple of things to look forward to:

Open House :  Multicultural Food tables and displays - please bring in baking/food from your country on May 4th.  The Open House is between 5-7 pm.   You can bring your food that morning, or just before 5pm.   We will make flags and information to show where it is from/the name, etc.  
Keep track of the time you spend making food, and those people who help, can also help to sell - this is a great way to get your volunteer hours!!!   If your parents help make it, you can still help sell as well.
Thanks so much for your support with this event - this is always one of the most popular tables of the evening!!

We are now starting new units.  Period 2 will be learning about story elements and reading short stories.  Period 3 and 4 are beginning an amazing novel study.   There will be some homework to complete questions/activities/writing to go along with the chapters read.

After reading so many Newsela articles, you are all now very familiar with newspaper articles and their format.   For those writing the OSSLT, please watch these videos AND MAKE NOTES TO SHOW ME.  The internet has been up and down at school, and these will really help.

Plan:
1. Read the headline and picture and decide on an event. Ask: “What happened?”
2. Jot down answers to the questions: Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?
3. List the names of the participants.

Write:
1. Write the first paragraph using the answers to your 5Ws.
2. Write the body: Explain using details what happened, using quotations from participants to support the facts in your news story. (Make them up. They do not have to be accurate!)
3. Quotations are important in the newspaper article.   Include a couple of quotations - from eye witnesses, participants, observers, experts - make them up! 
4. Write in the third person (he, she it, they) Avoid using the first person. (I)
5. Write in the past tense. (Last Monday, Bridget H. came fourth in the slalom race at OFSSA.)
6. Write a conclusion or ending to your news story.

 What Is Summarizing?
Summarizing is how we take larger selections of text and reduce them to their bare essentials:
the gist, the key ideas, the main points that are worth noting and remembering.

How to Write a Summary Paragraph
1. Read through the entire passage of text to get a sense of what it’s about and what the author’s message or purpose is.
2. Go back and reread the text in sections, highlighting or underlining information you feel is important to the overall meaning.
3. Decide what the main idea of the passage is, and choose one point that supports it.
4. Write your summary, stating the main idea and one supporting detail clearly.

 What Are We Doing When We Summarize?
We focus on the heart of the matter. We try to find the key words and phrases that, when uttered later, still manage to capture the gist of what we've read. We are trying to capture the main ideas and the crucial details necessary for supporting them.

What is the first step in writing the summary paragraph?
Read through the entire passage of text to get a sense of what it’s about and what the author’s message or purpose is. In other words, determine the main idea.
